Thoughts on Dark Capitalism

·331 words·2 mins· loading · loading · ·

When working for results is optimized for profits, you’re doomed. People focus too much on competition, cutting corners, loosing the soul for work. When competition becomes the norm, you start losing the soul in everything not just work. A society that is optimized to make profits over everything else is on a path to failure.

Don’t get me wrong I love capitalism. The fact that a person or a few people can come together and create something remarkable that can change the society for the better is amazing. Capitalism gives us the base on which creators can spring board themselves to better the society and the world. But it also has it own downsides. You’re free to manipulate the market and use dark psychological tactics to make people want things that they actually do not need.

Create fake hype and branding, create branding that makes people prefer your brand even though it doesn’t offer anything better than the other one.

It all comes down to greed. Capitalism enables the greedy to want more. Will there be better systems someday that will create guardrails for capitalism? maybe someday, but by looking at how things are going so far, that day won’t come anytime soon.

The system is designed to exploit everything, the planet, the people, nature itself. As consumerism increases we cycle through products faster. As an Indian, I see westerners changing cars, phones, every few years. Discarding 52 clothing items a year and what not.

I use to think its a western thing, it won’t happen here in India, but I wan naive. We Indians just don’t have that kind of expendable income yet. If we do get that level of income it won’t take half a decade for us to start behaving the same way.

Why will it work? because the rules of the game are the same no matter where you play it. You can’t override psychological manipulation and dark tactics used by companies to create desires in you.
